Fort Travis

Fort Travis is located on Bolivar Point, which is located across the ship channel from Galveston, but can be reached by regularly scheduled ferry service from Galveston. Fort Travis has two Endicott period period batteries (Battery Davis, two 8-inch guns; Battery Ernst, three 3-inch guns), both located as to be a part of the seawall protecting the point. The extended exposure to salt spray has been very hard on these batteries, with Battery Davis in particularly bad condition. Unfortunately, I cannot locate my pictures of either of these batteries at present

Battery Kimble is the largest battery at Fort Travis. Much like Battery Hoskins at Fort Crockett, and Battery Langdon at Fort Pickens, it was built shortly after World War 1 to make use of spare 12-inch gun barrels. In contrast to the two previously mentioned batteries, Battery Kimble was never casemated, so you can see what this type of battery looked like without being modified.

The large concrete pad in the foreground is where one of the guns of Battery Kimble was mounted. The hill located to the left in the picture is the magazine.
Another view Battery Kimble, showing more of the magazine, which was located between the two guns.
